Man to receive mental health treatment after firing gun in home
NEW HARTFORD — A 49-year-old man is undergoing mental health treatment after being accused of firing a rifle inside his home on Sherrill Lane very early Tuesday morning, according to the New Hartford Police Department.
Police said the man, whose identity was not released, seemed emotionally disturbed when he fired a single shot from a rifle into the ceiling of his residence at about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. A woman was present at the time and no one was injured, authorities said.
Officers responded to the home and the man was taken into custody without incident. Police said he was taken to an area hospital and is undergoing psychological treatment.
An Extreme Protection Order Investigation was initiated at the residence and all firearms were removed, police said. A court hearing has been scheduled to determine if the man can keep his weapons.
Police said a charge of second-degree reckless endangerment, a misdemeanor, is pending the man's release from the hospital.
