Man pleads guilty to role in Utica fatal shooting


UTICA — A Utica man pleaded guilty in County Court on Monday to his role in a fatal shooting in the city. Charles Phillips, of Utica, pleaded guilty before Judge Robert L. Bauer on Monday to one count of second-degree possession of a weapon. His case was adjourned for sentencing to June 23.

Co-defendant Charisma Hunt, 24, of Utica, is scheduled for sentencing on May 5 after she previously pleaded guilty to charges of first-degree manslaughter and second-degree possession of a weapon.

Police said at about midnight on Dec. 14, 2020, Hunt shot and killed 17-year-old Jah’zeir Johnson in the 1400 block of City Street.

Authorities said Phillips was an accomplice to the homicide.
