Man pleads guilty in Rome shooting

A Utica man admitted in County Court to shooting a man at the Byrne Dairy in Rome.

Joseph F. Amberg, 35, of Howard Avenue, pleaded guilty before Judge Michael L. Dwyer Thursday to one count of second-degree possession of a weapon, according to court officials.

His case was adjourned for sentencing to Dec. 3, according to court officials.

Police said Amberg shot another man once in the leg in the Byrne Dairy parking lot on Erie Boulevard East at about 10 p.m. March 17.

Police said Amberg then fled the scene in a vehicle.

The victim was treated at a local hospital, the law enforcers added.

Following an investigation, police said they identified Amberg as the shooter, and he was located in Utica on March 31 and then taken into custody on the charges.
