Man accused of taking mother’s car

A 56-year-old man has been charged with taking his mother’s car without permission in Rome, according to law enforcement officials.

Police said Richard Nelson, of West North Street, took the keys out of his mother’s purse and took her car without permission from their home on June 19. Police said the mother notified the authorities on June 23, and the vehicle had yet to be returned.

Police said the case was turned over to City Court and a criminal summons was filed against Nelson. Authorities said he turned himself in to answer the summons on Tuesday on one count of third-degree unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

He is scheduled to reappear in court.
