Malnourished bear cub rescued in Herkimer County

SALISBURY — A malnourished and seemingly abandoned bear cub was captured in the Town of Salisbury and brought to a wildlife center, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

On Jan. 31, officials said they received a complaint of a black bear cub that had been lingering near a residence in the Town of Salisbury in Herkimer County. The bear had reportedly been in the area for at least five days with no signs of its mother, and officials said it was malnourished and unlikely to survive on its own.

Conservation Officer Robert Howe responded to area and safely captured the bear cub, officials said. It was taken to Friends of the Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center in Greene County, a licensed wildlife rehabilitation center. Officials said the bear cub will receive care and treatment until it can safely be released back into the wild.
