UTICA — A 17-year-old male is being charged in connection with burglary and a pair of sexual assaults that took place Saturday, Jan. 14, according to Utica police.

Police say the male went door-to-door looking to sexually assault women with two victims, a 15-year-old girl and a 67-year-old woman, managing to get away and call police. Both assaults occurred several blocks apart on the city's southeast side Saturday evening.

The teen — whose name is being withheld due to his young age — is scheduled to be arraigned this morning on charges of second-degree burglary, first-degree sexual abuse, first-degree criminal sexual act, second-degree unlawful imprisonment and first-degree rape.

According to a police statement, "On January 16 members of the Utica Police Department located and arrested the suspect responsible for the burglary and sexual assaults that occurred on Saturday, Jan. 14 on South St. and Hilton Ave."

“On the 14th we released information about the incidents including videos and still shots of the suspect. Almost immediately tips began pouring in regarding the identity of the suspect. We cannot thank the public enough for their assistance,” the statement continued. "Additionally, our investigators and officers combed through hundreds of hours of surveillance footage locating the suspect and following his movements that evening.”

“Once enough corroborating probable cause was developed, investigators with the Criminal Investigation Division and officers with the Patrol Division arrested the male and brought him to the Utica Police Department,” the statement added.

At his arraignment, the appropriate court of jurisdiction will be assigned, officials said. “Our thoughts continue to be with the victims in the two incidents,” the statement said.
