ROME — A machete attack in Rome on Monday that sent one man to the hospital is under investigation by the Rome Police Department, according to city officials.

Authorities said one man suffered severe injuries to his lower leg after being attacked by other people armed with a machete shortly before 4 p.m. on Monday. The attack occurred in the parking area near DeMatteo’s restaurant on East Dominick Street.

According to city officials, witnesses in the area rushed to the victim’s aid, including a volunteer firefighter with medical equipment. The bystanders applied a tourniquet to the victim’s leg before he was rushed to a Utica hospital, authorities stated. His condition could not be learned on Tuesday.

The identities of those involved have not yet been released. Calls to the Rome Police Department seeking more information on the incident were not returned.
