LETTER: Loss of Mazzaferro’s is like a bad dream, but it will be back

When I awoke this morning  somehow I thought maybe it was all a bad dream. Mazzaferro’s Meat Market — it really is gone?

This news for John and I seemed unreal and still does. Immediately all the memories came to the two of us —family members who worked there years ago. John’s grandfather who started the business. His grandmother — the uncles. So many are gone.

I’m sure there was quite a gathering in heaven when they heard the sad news. As for John and I we recalled the many years he worked at the market. From the time he was a child it was a  part of his life. When we first met and dated he would pick me up after he finished those hours at the market. For sure every Mazzaferro was married on a holiday. It just HAD to be.

For us it was Thanksgiving but many other holidays were covered too by other family members. The market could never close on a Saturday for an event like this! Even after we were married John always held two jobs — his teaching position at RFA in biology and then his part time job at the market.

It was a way of life. Yes — life is built on memories and we certainly have many to cherish of Mazzaferro’s Meat Market. It won’t be the end of a beautiful lasting family tradition. No — the owners are young and it will be back. All the support of so many wonderful people in Rome NY will make it happen. There isn’t a doubt in our minds.

Thank you all for the beautiful posts John and  I have read about the Mazzaferro family.  It has helped and through these rough times turns our sadness into rays of hope for the future and a new beginning  for a lasting family tradition.

— Maryann Mazzaferro, Rome
