Loaded handgun seized in Utica traffic stop
UTICA — A Utica man has been charged with a felony after being found with a loaded revolver in his vehicle on James Street Sunday evening, according to the Utica Police Department.
Police said Asad Mohamed, 19, was pulled over for vehicle and traffic violations in the 400 block of James Street around 6 p.m. Police said it was learned that Mohamed did not have a valid license and was wanted on an outstanding warrant from Texas.
His vehicle was searched and towed, and police said they found a large quantity of handgun ammunition and a loaded .38-caliber revolver in a backpack on the backseat floorboard. Mohamed was taken into custody and two young family members in his vehicle were turned over to their parents, authorities stated.
Mohamed is charged with second-degree possession of a weapon, a felony, and criminal possession of a firearm, along with several vehicle and traffic violations, police stated. He is scheduled to appear in Utica City Court.
