LETTER: We can’t pardon Trump’s behavior

I was surprised by the Cal Thomas editorial “Lock HIM up” in the June 16 Sentinel.

For those not familiar with Thomas’s writing history, he is significantly “right of center” so his call for Trump to “withdraw from the field and allow younger and less controversial candidates” replace him was astounding. Thomas even said that he was “disgusted by Trump’s behavior and failure to accept the results of the 2020 election.” Finally, Thomas has written something I can agree with!

But the gist of his editorial was that Trump should not be indicted, and that Biden should pardon him like Ford did with Nixon. Even Thomas sees a criminal indictment and prosecution is likely at this point and that it will likely divide the nation.  On these points, I completely disagree. Yes, it will be difficult and divisive, but the alternative — to turn a blind eye toward or pardon his behavior — is even worse.

Thomas states we have two justice systems, one for the little people and one for the wealthy and powerful, and people should just accept that. That is hogwash, and any who find that acceptable need to question their concept of what it means to be an American. Trump may not be convicted, but it would be a travesty if he is not indicted.
