LETTER: Conole is wrong on Carrier Corp.

In a recent TV ad for our local congressional seat, Democrat Francis Conole tells the story of his father who lost his job at Carrier Corp. when, according to Conole, the company outsourced the work to make bigger profits.

That’s not what really happened. I know because I was there at Carrier working in the labs. The union workforce at Carrier was prone to strike when their contract came due every three years. The union employees had good pay and benefits, better than what I was getting. But more times than not, the union would go out on strike when the contract expired.

In the mid 1980s Carrier was designing high efficiency compressors for their products to stay competitive in their markets. Highly toleranced scroll, screw and rotary compressors were the future of the industry and Carrier had developed and tested them all. Now they needed to invest millions of dollars to retool their machining centers in Syracuse to manufacture them.

In the midst of that process the union contract was going to expire. The company asked the union not to strike as this could change the course of the decision to invest. But of course the union went on strike anyway. So with an unreliable and uncooperative union workforce the company decided to move manufacturing elsewhere.

As usual Democrats will twist a story to make it look like corporate greed was to blame but really the union leadership could have worked with the company to try and save jobs. Carrier in Syracuse employed about 8,000 people in the 80’s but today only about 1,000. The union and its Democratic leaders must bear some of that blame. Vote Republican Brandon Williams. Corporations and business owners bring in jobs, Democrats take from them and sometimes they take too much.
