LETTER: Another attempt to rewrite Thanksgiving history

Has anyone else noticed the left’s most recent attempt to re-write our history?

We all know the story of the first Thanksgiving. After a perilous journey (made for the freedom to worship God as they chose), the Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts in November 1620.

They suffered through winter, and in the spring the Indians showed them how best to plant crops here. They enjoyed a bountiful harvest that fall, and so had a celebration to give thanks to God for their plenty.

In 1789, President George Washington wrote in his Thanksgiving Proclamation “…Whereas both houses of Congress have by their joint committee requested me ‘to recommend to the people of the United States a day of public thanks-giving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God. ... Now therefore
I do recommended and assign Thursday the 26th of November next to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be.”

In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November “a day of
Thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father,” and in 1941 Congress passed a resolution to make the fourth Thursday in November “America’s Thanksgiving Day.”

So why then does the November 12 issue of the Daily Sentinel, in a Mini Page article on
Thanksgiving, for children, state “Experts believe the Harvest Home festival was more of a celebration then a time of giving thanks?”

What garbage! So who are these so-called experts?  They are leftists bent on us becoming a secular nation because if we believe in God as our help in life who needs government?
