Lee Unity Seniors get lesson on avoiding scams
LEE — The Lee Unity Seniors learned about a variety of scams as guest speaker Oneida County Sgt. Curtis Morgan explained some typical scams at the Wednesday, Jan. 4 monthly meeting.
A scam is an attempt to defraud someone of their money. This is real and happens everywhere — especially seniors.
Unfamiliar with the latest technology, seniors are especially targeted for scams by phone, mail, and computer. Social media permeates the lives of many people, but social media is a gold mine for scammers.
Morgan explained how personal information is obtained as well as access to bank and credit card accounts with devastating results to the victim. Warning signs of a scam and how to handle a suspicious phone call or email were given.
Members shared their experiences in being targeted for scams.
Lee Unity Seniors said it’s important to know how you can protect yourself and not get scammed.
Lee Unity Seniors meet the first Wednesday of the month at 1 p.m. at Lee Town Hall.
Residents of Lee and Ava, who are over 55 years of age, are welcome to join.
