Juvenile escapes transport vehicle at county jail
WHITESTOWN — A juvenile headed for the Oneida County jail managed to escape into the nearby woods for a short time Tuesday afternoon, according to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.
Authorities said the juvenile, whose identity was not released due to his young age, was in custody on a felony charge from Allegany County and was brought to the Oneida County jail around 5 p.m. Tuesday to be housed. Authorities said the juvenile was in an Allegany County transport vehicle that was pulling into the sally port area of the jail when he rolled down a window and climbed out of the vehicle.
The juvenile was not in restraints, authorities noted.
The juvenile ran from the jail into a wooded area nearby, pursued by deputies and investigators from the facility. He was caught and taken back into custody a short time later and was returned to the jail.
The incident remains under investigation and charges are pending, authorities stated.
