CASTORLAND — A chimney fire in Lewis County was kept from spreading to the rest of the house by local volunteers, according to the Castorland Fire Department.

The alarm was raised at 5:44 a.m. Monday for a chimney fire at 9638 Elm St., authorities said. Responding firefighters started to knock down in the fire in the chimney from the outside when the flames started to spread into peak of the roof.

While crews doused the chimney fire, several firefighters were sent inside to protect property in a second floor bedroom. Officials said the fire suppression efforts kept the flames from spreading any further into the roof. Smoke was also ventilated from the home.

The residents were not displaced due to the fire, official said. The cause remains under investigation. Crews were back in service by 7:30 a.m.

The Castorland and Lowville fire departments responded.
