UTICA — A fire that displaced three people on Seward Avenue in Utica late Wednesday night has been blamed on a space heater, according to the Utica Fire Department.

Fire officials said the alarm was raised at 11:43 p.m. Wednesday for a fire on the second floor of 9 Seward Ave., located between Genesee Street and French Road on Utica’s west side.

The flames were quickly knocked down on the second floor, with fire damage contained to two bedrooms.

There was some smoke damage throughout the second floor, and water damage on the first floor and in the basement, officials said.

The fire was caused by an overloaded electrical circuit from a space heater in one of the bedrooms, fire officials
said.

No one was injured. The American Red Cross is assisting the three residents displaced by the blaze, authorities stated.
