Homeless man accused of shoplifting, resisting arrest

A homeless man is facing multiple charges after law enforcement officials said he shoplifted from the Tops supermarket and then fought with police.

Authorities said Christopher S. Shear, 44, of Rome, stole a beach bag and beer from Tops at about 1:51 p.m. Monday, while also drinking several drinks inside the store.

Police caught up with Shear in the shopping plaza parking lot, according to the law enforcement officials.

Police said Shear appeared to be intoxicated and he argued with the officers who told him to drop what was in his hands.

Police said Shear took a swing at one of the officers while holding a can of beer.

When officers took Shear to the ground to hand-cuff him, police said Shear struck one of the officers in the head with a full beer can.

Police said Shear continued to struggle while on the ground.

Shear is charged with
one count each of petty larceny, second-degree harassment
and resisting arrest, police

Shear had also been charged the day before with an open container violation, authorities said.

He is scheduled to appear in City Court to answer the charges, the authorities added.
