NELSON — A 36-year-old man is facing multiple charges after a high speed chase and crash in Madison County Sunday evening, according to the Madison County Sheriff's Office.

Sheriff's deputies said Justin LaPier, of Minoa, Onondaga County, was spotted in the Village of Canastota driving a stolen 2016 Hyundai Elantra on Sunday. Village police officers attempted to stop the vehicle, and authorities said LaPier hit the gas and drove away at a high rate of speed.

The Hyundai crashed into another vehicle in the Village of Chittenango, and police chased him to the Onondaga County line before calling off the pursuit.

A helicopter with the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office picked up the pursuit of the stolen vehicle and notified the Madison County Sheriff's Office that LaPier had returned to Madison County via Route 92 in Cazenovia at about 6:30 p.m. The helicopter followed the car from the air as authorities said LaPier sped through Cazenovia and Nelson.

The Hyundai crashed into a front porch and abandoned residence on Nelson Road in Nelson, and LaPier fled the crash on foot, authorities said. The helicopter stayed with him and sheriff's deputies took LaPier into custody while he was trying to forcibly steal another vehicle on Route 20.

LaPier is charged with one count each of attempted second-degree robbery, attempted fourth-degree grand larceny, third-degree menacing, fourth-degree possession of stolen property, resisting arrest, second-degree obstruction of a governmental administration, reckless driving and numerous additional vehicle and traffic violations, deputies said.

He was arraigned in court and was sent to the Madison County Jail without bail. He is scheduled to reappear in court.
