UTICA — One woman was hospitalized after being shot by a man on Utica's west side Thursday afternoon. The gunman is dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after barricading himself into Fred's Dari-Del, according to the Utica Police Department.
Lt. Michael Curley said the man, whose identity was not immediately released, shot the woman in the abdomen near the Dari-Del convenience store at the corner of Noyes and York streets at about 1:30 p.m. Police said the gunman then went back into the store and shot himself.
He is "confirmed dead," Curley said Thursday afternoon, from a "self-inflicted gunshot wound."
When law enforcement and rescue personnel arrived on the scene, the woman was rushed to a Utica hospital for emergency surgery, Curley said. Her condition was not immediately available.
With the gunman inside the store, Curley said police surrounded the area and attempted to speak with him from outside. After 3 p.m., police entered the store, and Curley said they found his body in a restroom.
The area was closed during the investigation, with several local schools placed on lockout.
The investigation remains ongoing.
