Hamilton College, Utica University both advance in Division III tourney
Both local schools advanced into the second round of the Division III men's basketball tournament Friday. Hamilton College beat Monclair State 84-75 and Utica University defeated Babson College 72-60.
Hamilton College won at Johns Hopkins University's Goldfarb Gymnasium in Baltimore.
Hamilton (20-8) led 46-43 at the half and then the Continentals outscored the Red Hawks 38-32 in the second half to seal the win.
Conner Rood had a game-high 22 points for Hamilton along with eight rebounds and seven assists. Hank Morgan added 15 and Teja Singh had 10.
Montclair (22-6) was paced by Keyon Price with 18 points.
Hamilton plays the winner of Friday's game between Johns Hopkins and Mitchell College. The game is set for 6 p.m. Saturday.
Pioneers cruise by Babson
The Pioneers trailed 32-30 at the half but rallied to outscore the Beavers 42-28 in the second half.
The game was played in Esbjornson Gymnasium at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey.
Darius Hopkins led Utica (23-4) with 21 points. Whitesboro graduate Thomas Morreale scored 15. Justice Brantley added 14. Rome Free Academy grad Damien Call contributed six points.
Babson (19-9) was led by Nate Amado with 24 points.
Utica will play the winner of Friday's game between Rowan and Cal Lutheran. The game will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
