Green waste pickup in Rome to begin Monday

The city Department of Public Works will begin the weekly collection of green waste and brush pickup for the inside corporation district starting Monday, March 29.

DPW crews will pickup green waste the day before the regular rubbish pickup day. For example, if your rubbish day is Tuesday, then green waste will be picked up on Monday.

The schedule will continue for the leaf pickup schedule to begin in the fall. Contractors are prohibited from placing green waste and brush at the curb and are responsible for their own disposal.

All green waste must be in a container — no loose piles of green waste will be picked up. Use five 30 gallon containers or five 30 gallon 100% biodegradable lawn-plus leaf paper bags. Each container or bag should weigh no more than 50 pounds. Bags are sold at Ace, Tops, Price Chopper, Walmart, Hannaford’s and Lowe’s.

No foreign matter should be co-mingled with green waste, such as paper, household garbage, stones, concrete or animal feces.

Unacceptable containers are plastic garbage bags, cardboard boxes and city-issued garbage and recycling containers.

Any disposal of green waste in such containers will be left at the curb.

Brush and limbs should be cut up to no more than 5 feet in length with butt ends facing toward the road. Limbs should be no larger than 6-inches in diameter and manageable by hand. There will be no shrub/root ball pickup at the curb.

All residents can bring their green waste, brush, limbs larger than 6-inches in diameter and shrubs/root balls to Rome City Yard, 132 Race St., Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, residents are not required to sign in at the office for green waste disposal Monday through Friday, until further notice.
