Grant to help Western Town Library replace, upgrade computer at circulation desk

WESTERNVILLE — The Western Town Library has received a $900 grant to replace and upgrade one of the computers at its circulation desk. The existing computer had been retired due to software that was no longer supported by the Mid York Library System. Mid York had loaned the library a computer to use until replacement was possible.

The new equipment — a laptop with a docking station — greatly improves the inventory process and allows for use of a large screen monitor for easier viewing of reports and websites, according to an announcement by library officials.

The new computer also provides video and audio capability for virtual meetings.

The grant was provided by the Northern New York Community Foundation through the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund, which was established in 2018 to support programs, projects and initiatives designed to broadly impact, and enhance the quality of life in the communities of Boonville, Constableville, and Westernville in perpetuity.

Kenneth V. Sawyer and Jeannette Remp Sawyer were passionate about the quality of life in their community, library officials said, and they believed that contributing to community with meaningful acts of philanthropy were important facets of a fulfilling life.

The Western Town Library is a multipurpose organization dedicated to enriching the lives of community members by providing recreational and educational services. It is an affiliate of the Mid-York Library System which provides support, on-line services and shares the Mid-York catalog of books, magazines and DVDs, officials said.

The library’s is open from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday thru Thursday and from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. State guidelines for operation during the COVID-19 pandemic include the use of masks by all inside the library, limits to the number of patrons allowed at one time and appointments required for use of computers on site. Curbside pick up is still available for those who would prefer the service.

Inter-library holds have just been reinstated, officials said, adding that WiFi access is available outside the library seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
