Gannon to seek re-election as City Court judge
ROME — Sitting Rome City Court Judge John C. Gannon has announced that he will run for re-election in November, seeking to continue his service of more than two decades on the bench.
“The legal environment is ever changing and ever challenging. The need for integrity, service and continuity are more important than ever,” Gannon said in a statement.
“During the past 23 years as City Court judge, I have worked hard for the citizens of Rome to bring fairness, equity and justice for all.”
Gannon, age 65, was first elected to the bench in 1999 and has served continuously since. He started as a part-time judge before being elected to a full-time position in 2012.
Gannon oversees criminal, civil, landlord/tenant, small claims, commercial claims and vehicle and traffic cases. Gannon is a graduate of Rome Free Academy and is a lifelong resident of Rome. He attended Colgate University for his undergraduate degree, and then graduated Vermont Law School.
Gannon lives in Rome with his wife, Anne, a longtime instrumental band teacher in the Rome City School District. They have five children. Gannon is a registered Democrat.
“I love my job, and I am good at my job,” Gannon said about his decision to run again. “I am just as eager to run and do this job as I was in 1999.”
Should Gannon win re-election for a new 10-year term, he will be required by state law to retire halfway through when he reaches the age of 70.
The election will be held on Nov. 7. Also seeking the City Court position is Stephanie Viscelli, Rome’s Common Council president. Viscelli is a Republican.
