Fundraisers to help team reach national tourney

Rome Girls 14U Hockey Team went 5-0 at the state Amateur Hockey Association Tournament and were awarded the opportunity to travel and play at Nationals in Denver, Colo.

The team has multiple fund-raisers planned to assist with travel and tournament fees, and is looking for help from local businesses and community members. They are trying to raise up to $45,000.

“The girls have worked hard all season in a difficult year, and that hard work earned them back-to-back state championships and a chance to compete at nationals,” said head coach Steve Zizzo. “We’re very proud of them.” The coaching team also includes assistant coach John Blaich.

Those interested may donate to the team’s Facebook page at

There will be a spaghetti dinner hosted by the Toccolana Club, 1412 E. Dominick St., from 5-7 p.m. Monday, April 19. Opportunities will be available to dine-in or take-out. Cost is $10. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door. For advance tickets contact Christine Crowley at 315-439-2161. All proceeds will be donated to the team.

Neighbors may also drop off cans and bottles to Erie Blvd. W. Returns at 1188 Erie Blvd. W., and by mentioning the girls’ team, refunds may be donated to Rome Girls Hockey. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Also, Rome Grizzlies U14 Girls Ice Hockey Team is partnering with Candella’s Farm & Greenhouses at 9256 River Road, Marcy, to sponsor a Flower & Plant Sale. Candella’s will be allocating a portion of a full-price purchase, less tax, to support the girls’ trip to Denver.

Patrons may also place an order online, with curbside pickup, at At checkout, go to the “note” section and state, “This order is for U14 Girls Rome Grizzlies Hockey Team.” To order and request curbside pickup, also call 315-736-8782. COVID guidelines continue to be followed at the greenhouse.

“The Rome Girls Hockey Team won their second consecutive state championship and will advance to Nationals in Colorado, but it’s an extremely expensive endeavor,” said Third Ward Councilor Kimberly Rogers during Wednesday’s council meeting. “My cousin’s daughter plays on that team. They’re doing fund-raisers, but it will cost about $50,000 for them to get there. So if businesses are listening or people want to donate, they would be appreciative of that. They won last year, but because of COVID, Nationals were canceled.”

The first game of Nationals is scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 29. Team members are: Abigail Dicks; Alexa Thompson; Casey Clausen; Gracen Grimm; Gretchen Grimm; Isabella Nappi; Isabelle Newton; Kelsey Fuller; Leola Johnson; Meghan Crowley; Solana Zizzo; and Tiffany Lasher
