Friends, family help Sherrill woman mark centennial

SHERRILL — Friends and family of Fern Louise (Wood) Welch helped her celebrate her 100th birthday recently with a drive-by parade and celebration.

Welch graduated from high school in 1938 and soon after married her husband, George. In 1955, the couple and their four daughters moved to Westmoreland, where the pair lived for more than 50 years.

Welch has been a member of the New York State Grange for 72 years and was a member of the congregation of the Westmoreland Methodist Church for some six decades.

After the death of her husband, Welch moved to Sherrill to live with a daughter and son-in-law.

“She may not be doing water aerobics anymore or taking her one-mile walks around Sherrill,” a writeup by family members say, “but she has stayed active in many other ways. She is a member of the Sherrill Garden Club and has helped make hospital masks and caps for local care providers.”

“Other pastimes include family genealogy, road trips, family reunions and birthdays,” the writeup adds.

Welch has 15 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and
1 great-great granddaughter.
