Four to be inducted into Rome Bowling Hall of Fame Saturday
ROME — The Rome Bowling Hall of Fame annual induction ceremony will be held on Saturday night at Teugega Country Club.
This year’s inductees are Vie Evans, the late Julie Hooks, Michael Ferlo Jr. and the late Bradley Ruble.
The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. with an open bar and a buffet dinner will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at King Pin Lanes for $35. If any past Hall of Fame member would like to attend you can contact Al Brockway for your ticket at the reduced price of $25.
Evans has been a member of the Rome Women’s Bowling Association for over 40 years. She has participated in the Spare Tires, Cresent Girls and Finks leagues. She has won many individual and league awards. Evans has participated in over 20 Rome Women’s Bowling Association Championship tournaments. She was a member of many committees as well as a tournament score keeper. She was a 2003 RWBA City Tournament Singles Champion and a two-time winner of the Senior Singles Tournament in 2007 and 2013.
Evans’ high game is 250, high series 620 and high average 177. She is an avid golfer who has won many Rome City Women’s Amateur golf titles.
Hooks participated in league bowling for almost 50 years. Her career began in 1970 in the Naval Station Association in the Philippines. From 1977-1982 she bowled at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome. From 1982-1986 she bowled at Mirmar Naval Air Station in San Diego. She was a member of the Griffiss Air Force Base and Rome Women’s Bowling Association from 1986-2019. She participated in many leagues including the Rome Bowling Center Ladies Classic League, Clover Leaf, Crescent Girls, Faith Ryan, Franklin Hotel, John Lenihan Memorial and Auto Body Excellence/Marty Rieck leagues. She won many league and individual awards.
Hooks participated in many Rome Senior Tournaments and over 20 RWBA City Tournaments. She was a member of the 2016 Team Event Champions with Melissa Bronson, Toni Cadrette and Carrie Skidmore. In 2018 she was the New York State Women’s Bowling Association Tournament Doubles Champion. She was a member of the 500 600 Club. Her accomplishments include a high average of 182, high game of 279 and high series of 635.
Ferlo began bowling in adult leagues in 1991 and has bowled some impressive scores ever since. Affectionately known as “Sniper” he won the 1999 Rome City Tournament Doubles and many league championships. His first of nine 300 games was in 2006 at Pin O Rama, his high average of 221 was achieved in 2008 also at Kin Pin Lanes and his series of 857 was bowled in 2021 at King Pin Lanes.
While continuing to rack up high scores during league and tournament play, he also has been coaching the youth program at Pin O Rama since 2011.
Ruble, who graduated from Westmoreland High School in 1973, began bowling in 1974 while serving in the Army. After his military service he bowled in several leagues holding the office of secretary treasurer in the Merchant League and president of the Harmony League. With many league team championships to his credit he also had a second place finish in the prestigious King Pin singles tournament.
Ruble’s high average of 215 was achieved in 1987, high series 786 was bowled in 1990 and high game of 299 was rolled in 1996.
