EDITORIAL: Western Town Library looks toward future
One of the gems among attractions in our area is the Western Town Library, which was founded in 1923 and to this day continues to enhance the local community with its collection of books and other information services.
Over the past few years the 9172 Main St. library has embarked on a series of upgrades and improvements that will be showcased at an open house and inaugural Craft Fair on Saturday, July 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Many projects were made possible by several grants and donations.
“The library will be open for all to come in and see the improvements and hear about the support that has been given by the Mid York Library Construction Grants which are New York State supported; the Rome Community Foundation, including the Stevens-Kingsley Fund; the Hazan B. Hinman, Sr. Foundation; the Griffin Charitable Foundation; the Kenneth V. & Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation; the Jeremiah McCarthy Family Foundation; the Wadas Family Foundation, the Community Foundation, and more,” an announcement said.
In addition there will be a Craft Fair on the lawn of the library. The fair, a fundraising event to support the library in its operations, will feature an assortment of crafts sold by local artists. There will also be a used book sale, food, raffles and door prizes.
From its early days, during which it was moved among homes, and then to rooms at the Town Hall, the library has broadened its collections and expanded its hours. In 1974 the library located at its present site, where it continues to assist visitors with its recreational and educational services.
