ROME — A pet dog was resuscitated after being found unresponsive at a house fire on Carroll Street in Rome on Sunday, according to the Rome Police Department.

No people were harmed. Two adults have been displaced, fire officials stated.

Deputy Fire Chief David L. Gratch said neighbors discovered the fire at 1605 Carroll St. and raised the alarm to 911 shortly after 1 p.m. on Sunday. The two-story home is located just south of the intersection with West Chestnut Street.

On arrival, Gratch said there was "smoke coming from the basement windows, windows in the house."

The home itself "was all locked up" because the two adult residents were not at home, the chief said. Neighbors alerted firefighters to the fact that several pets lived in the residence.

Firefighters made forced entry into the home and found the fire in the basement, Gratch said. Crews knocked down the flames in a matter of minutes.

"The fire damage stayed in the basement," Gratch stated. "There was heat damage all the way up to the second floor," as well as smoke damage throughout the home.

Two cats were found inside the residence and firefighters helped them outside. The chief said they also found an unresponsive pet dog.

"The dog, they had to carry out, because she was unresponsive," Gratch stated.

The fire department and AmCare Ambulance gave oxygen to the dog and she was revived.

"She seemed OK after," Gratch said.

"When the owners got home, she really woke up, came around."

No people were injured during the firefight. Gratch said the home is not a total loss, but the residents are currently displaced. He said they have insurance on the home.

The cause is believed to be "accidental," Gratch said. "Possibly a charging battery in the basement."

The cause investigation remains ongoing, he noted.

According to city tax records, the property is owned by resident Adam J. Long. There is a $76,400 assessed property value.
