ONEIDA — Dr. Liza Jones will speak on the topic of “Precision Medicine: Using Pharmacogenomics and Nutrigenomics to Guide Your Health” at the Oneida YMCA, 701 Seneca St., at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 6.

What is precision medicine, pharmacogenomics and nutrigenomics?

According to the National Institutes of Health, precision medicine is an innovative, individualized approach to medicine taking into consideration a person’s genes, environment and lifestyle. Included in this scientific approach is pharmacogenomics and nutrigenomics.

Pharmacogenomics (Gx) is a science that uses your DNA to determine how your body will respond to medications.

Nutrigenomics (NGx) is the study of how one’s genes affect the ability to process food, nutrients and exercise.

Dr. Jones will introduce the audience to these sciences and explain how they are used to guide an individual’s health choices.

The Wellness Speaker Series, sponsored by Excellus BlueCross BlueShield, is free.

“If you are on medication and want to make sure your medicine is safe and effective based on your unique DNA, Pharmacogenomics (PGx) gives insights and answers,” Jones explained. “Nutrigenomics (NGx) is beneficial to anyone who is wants to get the most our of their diet and exercise routine. I enjoy helping people make informed decisions about their health and being a patient advocate.”

Registration is not required for the seminar. Food and beverages will be provided.

Additional seminars in the series will include:

  • Getting Prepared for a Healthy Lifestyle – Tuesday, April 18, 12:30 p.m.
  • Healthy Bones for Life: All About Osteoporosis – Wednesday, May 3, 12:30 p.m.
