UPDATE: Diesel spill shuts down roads in North Utica

Posted
UTICA — A large diesel fuel spill shut down a section of north Utica — including the Thruway — after a tractor trailer became disabled on Leland Avenue, according to the Utica Police Department.

Authorities said upwards of 2,500 gallons of diesel likely spilled from the tanker.

The tractor trailer became disabled at about 1:45 p.m. at the on-ramp to Route 790 from Leland Ave. in north Utica, police said. The tanker started to leak diesel fuel and the Oneida County Hazardous Materials team was called to the scene to stop the spill, with assistance from the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

No one was injured in the spill, police stated.

All streets, roads, highways and businesses around the spill were immediately shut down and evacuated, including the Price Chopper and other businesses in the North Utica Shopping Center. Police said the businesses will remain closed for the foreseeable future.

Police said the circumstances surrounding the disabled tractor trailer and the spill will be investigated. Police said residents in the area should expect an odor in the air, but it does not pose a risk of harm.
