Determination Gala to celebrate overcoming adversity

VERNON — The public is invited to join the YMCA of the Greater Tri-Valley in recognizing members who have used determination to overcome adversity and achieve goals at the annual Determination Celebration gala on Saturday, April 22.

The event will take place at 6 p.m. at Vernon Downs Casino and Hotel, 4229 Stuhlman Road.

Carefully selected, the honorees’ stories speak of overcoming pain or illness, maintaining independence, embracing aging, weight loss, and working to stay healthy in body and mind through persistence, motivation and commitment. These stories exemplify the YMCA’s mission to help individuals build a healthy spirit, mind and body through opportunities, programs and most of all, friendship and support from staff and members.

The gala is in memory of long-time Oneida member, Don Connelly, who suffered from post-polio syndrome. He overcame odds by using the Y regularly and, through determination, was able to enjoy life into his 90s. Each year, the YMCA of the Greater Tri-Valley acknowledges members in Oneida and Rome who, like Connelly, have used the Y to achieve significant goals and refuse to give up.

When Connelly passed away in 2004, he left the YMCA $90,000 in his will. To continue his legacy, all proceeds from the Don Connelly Celebration event benefit the YMCA’s Changing Lives Financial Assistance Program for children and families that are unable to afford YMCA programs and services.

Honorees:

  • Donna Cowan, Oneida YMCA;
  • Derek Goodwin, Oneida YMCA;
  • Jeff Gualandi, Rome YMCA;
  • Emily Hughes, Rome YMCA;
  • Eleanor Maw, Rome YMCA;
  • Nancy Morrison, Oneida YMCA;
  • Art Pierce, Oneida YMCA;
  • Joseph Raymond, Oneida YMCA;
  • Katherine Raymond, Oneida YMCA;

“We see these individuals daily, keeping a regular schedule despite limitations, age, ability level or the distance they travel,” said CEO Hank Leo. “Their resilience is an inspiration and their outlook on life is contagious. We invite everyone to come listen to their stories of determination and celebrate with them.”

The event will feature a buffet dinner, cash bar, a basket raffle, a D.J. and awards. Tickets are $45 per person or $80 a couple, or tables of 8 with a sponsorship are $500.

Tickets may be purchased online at www.ymcatrivalley.org, at the Oneida Family YMCA, 701 Seneca St. or the Rome Family YMCA, 301 W. Bloomfield St.
