TOWN OF VERONA — A Rome man is facing multiple felony charges after law enforcement officials said he threatened a woman with a gun and stole her property Wednesday afternoon.
Authorities said Joseph Ruggerio, 37, also injured a sheriff’s deputy who was trying to take him into custody.
Deputies said Ruggerio went to a woman’s resident on Germany Road shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday and threatened the woman with a firearm. Deputies said Ruggerio had entered the woman’s home unlawfully and forcefully stole property from her.
When deputies arrived and attempted to take Ruggerio into custody, authorities said he fled from the scene on foot. Deputies pursued, and authorities said Ruggerio struck one of the deputies in the head.
Both Ruggerio and the deputy were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Ruggerio is charged with one count each of second-degree assault, third-degree robbery, second-degree burglary, second-degree possession of a weapon, fourth-degree grand larceny, all felonies, and second-degree menacing, a misdemeanor, deputies stated. He is scheduled to appear in court.
