Crash sends five to hospital

TOWN OF LEE — Five people were hospitalized following a two-vehicle collision on Thomas Road on Friday.

Sheriff’s deputies said Richard McCarthy, 76, of Rome, was northbound on Thomas at about 12:21 p.m. when he attempted to make a left turn into a nearby driveway. Deputies said McCarthy’s 2012 Ford Escape turned in front of an oncoming 2019 Ford Fusion, driven by Christopher Hildenbrandt, 40, of Rome.

McCarthy and his passenger, 74-year-old Cynthia McCarthy, were taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica for their injuries, authorities said. Hildenbrandt and his two young passengers were treated at Rome Memorial Hospital.

Deputies said McCarthy was ticketed for failure to yield.

He is scheduled to appear in Town Court.
