Crash leaves 1,000 Utica homes without power

UTICA — More than 1,000 homes were without power on Utica’s east side early Wednesday morning after a car crashed into a utility pole at Bleecker Street and Culver Avenue, according to the Utica Police Department.

Police said the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed when he crashed into the pole at the intersection of Bleecker and Culver at about 4:15 a.m. The crash knocked down the pole and led to a large outage across the city’s east side. National Grid responded to the scene and worked throughout the morning to restore power.

The driver, whose identity was not released, was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica for head and chest pain, police said. He was issued several vehicle and traffic tickets, including speeding, police said. He is scheduled to appear in Utica City Court.
