ROME — A Rome man registered a blood alcohol content of nearly twice the legal limit after crashing into a fence on Henry Street Sunday night, according to the Rome Police Department.

Police said Joel S. Gualandi, 56, was driving drunk on Henry Street at about 7 p.m. Sunday when his sedan struck a fence in the 200 block. Police said the homeowner watched as Gualandi then drove off and pulled into a garage down the street.

Gualandi was found in the garage, and police said he registered a BAC of 0.14% — nearly twice the legal threshold of 0.08%.

Gualandi is charged with one count each of driving while intoxicated, driving with a blood alcohol content of 0.08% or greater and leaving the scene of an accident, police stated. He is scheduled to appear in Rome City Court.
