Corrections officer injured in inmate attack, union reports
MARCY — A corrections officer was injured inside Mid-State Correctional Facility after an inmate struck him in the mouth with a broomstick, according to the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association.
Authorities said a corrections officer ordered an inmate to clean up his food tray in the eating area on July 12, and the inmate refused. Authorities said the inmate grabbed a nearby broomstick and struck the officer in the mouth.
The officer used a dose of pepper spray to subdue the inmate, who was then taken into custody and brought to the infirmary for the pepper spray, authorities stated.
The inmate, whose identity was not released, is serving a 3-year sentence for weapons possession out of New York City.
The officer was treated at the facility for a small cut to his lower lip and neck pain, authorities said.
He remained on duty.
