UTICA — The Utica Comets got a goal early in the third period to tie the game 1-1 then score with a minute left in overtime to beat the visiting Providence Bruins 2-1 Friday night. The team has now won its first two games this season.
After a scoreless first period, the Bruins opened the scoring at 7:13 of the second. Oskar Steen netted his first goal of the season. They carried that lead into the second intermission.
Utica’s Brian Flynn scored his second goal of the season on a deflection 24 seconds into the third period to tie the game at 1-1. That would be the score at the end of the third.
In the three-on-three overtime, it was Arne Talvitie who rifled the shot past Bruins goalie Kyle Keyser for the victory. The goal — his second of the season — was assisted by Tyler Wotherspoon and Reilly Walsh with 59 seconds left in overtime.
Utica netminder Akira Schmid stopped 25 shots in his first start of the season.
The Comets are 2-0 on the season.
The Comets are back in action for their first road game of the season when they travel to Syracuse to take on the Crunch tonight at 7. The team returns home on Friday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
