CANTON — Three goals in the first two periods helped lift Colgate past St. Lawrence Saturday evening at Appleton Arena.

The Raiders completed the sweep in the ECAC men's hockey best-of-three quarterfinal series and advanced to the ECAC semifinals in Lake Placid, for the second-straight year. Colgate will take on No. 1 seed and No. 2 nationally-ranked Quinnipiac in the semifinals Friday. Game time and ticket information will be announced early next week.

Matt Verboon led the Raiders, tallying two points with a goal and an assist. Carter Gylander logged 31 stops in goal, picking up his 17th win of the year. The junior stooped 14 shots in the second period and 11 in the third.

"It was the kind of series that we expected. Two teams that are so evenly matched and it played out that way," Colgate coach Don Vaughan said. "I'm very proud of our guys and how they battled and adjusted to get the win tonight. St. Lawrence played a great game and came out very hard like we knew they would. It was a war out there, but we did what we needed to do to get the job done, and now we are moving on to Lake Placid for the second year in a row. I'm very proud of this group. With just under 13 minutes remaining in the second, Verboon gave Colgate a 3-0 advantage. Daniel Panetta picked up the puck and skated down the ice before he dished it to Verboon for a shot he finished off from in front of the goal.

The Saints answered back just 20 seconds later when Mason Waite scored. SLU cut the lead to one when Ty Naaykens scored an extra attacker goal with two and a half minutes left in the game.

Colgate prevailed in holding off the Saints for the remainder of the game, including some stops from Gylander.

Alex DiPaolo doubled the Raiders' lead when he found the back of the net 45 seconds into the second. The sophomore fired an initial shot that got blocked before he crashed for the rebound and put a second shot into the back of the net.

Colgate was awarded a five-minute power play with 5:28 remaining in the first after a video review turned into a five-minute-major penalty on the Saints for interference. The Raiders took advantage of the man-up chance when Ethan Manderville netted his seventh power-play goal of the season after he fired in a one-timer off of passes from Nick Anderson and Verboon.
