ROME — The city of Rome, in combination with the office of Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, D-119, Marcy, has purchased and has begun installation of indoor sport-court flooring at Kennedy Arena, 500 W. Embargo St., which will provide three courts for community use, according to an announcement Monday by city officials.

Though the flooring is lined for basketball, it is serviceable and available for all types of sports to use including soccer, box lacrosse, hockey and other sports, the announcement said.

“It has been one of our goals to better utilize Kennedy Arena as a year-round recreation facility, and we thank Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon for including a $50,000 line item in last year’s state budget to help us achieve that goal,” said Mayor Jacqueline M. Izzo.

“In addition to offering league play for basketball, we will also offer open gym sessions for children and adults, an activity that was previously only available at the YMCA,” Izzo added. “We hope to increase the opportunities for youth and adults to participate in open gym activities in the spring and summer along with the offerings at the YMCA.”

The operating season will be tentatively Monday, April 10, through Sunday, Sept. 10. All individuals and organizations are now able to reserve, book practices, tournaments, leagues and events. All reservation requests must go through the Recreation Department via email. The contacts for this are listed below. Reservations will be booked on a first-come, first-serve basis.

There will be three courts available for reservations. Monday-Thursday there will be three time slots available: 5 to 6:30 p.m., 6:40 to 8:10 p.m., and 8:20 to 9:50 p.m. There will be one time slot available on Fridays, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Weekends are available for booking from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Adult league play will be available on Thursday and Sunday nights.

The cost of usage will be $25 per court or $75 full-gym for 90-minute sessions. A $600 day-fee will also be available for larger events. A $50 deposit will be required for all complete day-fee events, the announcement said.

All organizations will be required to submit insurance naming the City of Rome as additional insured or complete our waiver system before usage is allowed.

Open Gym sessions will be available for the community. Open Gym times for youth 17 and ender are as follows: Monday through Friday, 3 to 4:45 p.m.; Friday and Saturday evenings, 6:45 to 8:45 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday afternoons 1 to 3 p.m. Open Gym times for adults age 18 and older are as follows: Monday through Friday, noon to 2:45 p.m. and Sunday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m.

Basketballs will be available and provided for free use. Open gym session will cost $1.

Individual and family season passes are available to purchase; the cost is $25 for an individual pass or $50 for a family pass.

Party Rentals will also be available during open gym session times. The cost will be $50 for the two-hour rental. The rental will include a private room, free admission to all party attendees, and one-court reserved exclusively for the group.
