Charles Scheiderich attended the St. Aloysius Academy, St. Mary’s School and Rome Catholic High School, graduating in 1965. He had many memories of his Catholic education, including walking to and from RCH each day from the 700 block of Liberty St.

He joined the Oneida County Sheriff’s Department in 1968, beginning his law enforcement career as a road patrol deputy. Later he was promoted to lieutenant in charge of the Mohawk Valley Police Academy.

For 13 years he trained hundreds of individuals from the 18 police agencies in Oneida County as well as outside agencies. Scheiderich also ran the correctional academy, training and certifying correctional officers and the promotional academies for both police officers and correctional officers. He spent months co-writing the 911 policy for Oneida County, seeking to safeguard the lives of the residents and all of the responding police officers and emergency medical responders.

He also spent months authoring a domestic violence policy, along with Judge Bernadette Romano, approved by New York State and adopted by most police departments in New York State.

Scheiderich also taught school bus safety courses to bus drivers and required boater safety courses. He attended the federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glenco, Georgia, and was certified as a police pursuit driving instructor. Subsequently, he designed the police pursuit driving course as well as served as a police firearms instructor,
a lieutenant in charge of the road patrol and as an administrative law judge for disciplinary
hearings.

He received many awards over his career, including a lifesaving award for evacuating the occupants of a burning building; a commendation for disarming a despondent male with a rifle who was threatening suicide; a commendation from the Rome Police Department for recovering a motor vehicle and its operator who drowned in the flood swollen Mohawk River.
