WESTERN — Using just a rope tow, a J-bar and a T-bar, the area offered skiing for the beginner, advanced and expert skier, Dave Woods started Woods Valley in 1964.
In those early days, there was a modest lodge and the first grooming equipment employed was actually pulled manually as Woods skied ahead of the home-made roller. During heavy snowstorms, he would lead the young alpine ski team athletes in “boot packing” the slopes.
“Dave’s creative can-do attitude still thrives at Woods Valley, and much has changed since he opened the facility,” the Rome Area Chamber of Commerce adds in its announcement that Woods Valley Ski Center, 9100 Route 46, has been named its Member of the Week honoree. “Two double chairlifts, several additions to the lodge, state-of-the-art snowmaking and grooming, extensive lighting for night skiing and riding, three terrain parks and a new snow tubing area have all been added to make the experience on and off the snow a great one,” the chamber added.
Woods Valley Ski Area has been teaching families to ski for more 50 years — and now the facility is continuing its expansion beyond downhill skiing, tubing, and snowboarding during the winter months.
Dave’s son, Tim, who is now the owner of the facility, he is the midst of a major project, enlarging and enhancing the main lodge and going into the banquet business year-round.
“We can no longer rely on doing business four months out of the year. Our winters just aren’t long enough,” Tim Woods said previously.
As part of the renovation work and additions, the base lodge will get new windows and insulation, as well as a new roof on the center of the chalet. There will also be a new kitchen.
“We’re doubling the seating in our cafeteria and we’re adding air conditioning to the lodge as we get into the banquet business and improve our winter business,” Woods said. “We’re keeping the fireplace, but everything will be renovated around it. We feel our business is also ideal for weddings and banquets.”
The target date for completion is November 2020.
