Boonville Concert Band to perform series of shows in Erwin Park

The Boonville Concert Band has announced several upcoming performances at the Lower Pavilion at Erwin Park, off of Route 12.

The band, comprised of accomplished instrumentalists from a wide area surrounding Boonville, will play at 7 p.m. on the following Friday nights: July 15, July 22, Aug. 5 and Aug. 19.

Spectators are advised to bring lawn chairs. The concerts are free and open to the public, although donations are always accepted and appreciated, organizers said, adding that proceeds go toward the continuance of the band.

Noted area musician and educator Martin Ischia will return to the podium this year, leading the band through its varied program, consisting of patriotic tunes, folk melodies, and medleys from musicals.

Among the highlighted pieces this season include:

“The Florentinier” by Julius Fucik — The march, described as a “Grande marcia Italiana,” was written in 1907. Fucik, known as “The Bohemian Sousa,” wrote hundreds of works, including marches, masses, chamber music, and operettas.

The Boonville Concert Band will celebrate the Broadway revival of “The Music Man” by featuring “Selections From
the Music Man,” including “Seventy-Six Trombones,” ‘Till There Was You,” and
“The Wells Fargo Wagon.”

“Instant Concert” by Harold Walters — The work uses 30 well known melodies and condenses them into a performance of three minutes and ten seconds. Listeners are encouraged to see if they can identify each tune.

As an added bonus, the Boonville Concert Band will have the 2020 recipient of the Boonville Concert Band
Scholarship guest lead a number. Sam Pohoreskey, a 2020 graduate of Adirondack Central School, will conduct “The Stars and Stripes Forever” by John Phillip Sousa. Pohoreskey, a student
at Onondaga Community
College, is looking forward to his directorial debut with the band, according to band officials.

The band is co-managed by O’Neil, band director at Adirondack High School, and Nunneker, vocal director at Adirondack High School. Sound is provided by Mitch Maryhugh, retired pool and audio-visual director at Adirondack High School.

The band continues to look for new members, officials said, and interested musicians can contact Ryan O’Neil via email at roneil@adirondackcsd.org or Heather Nunneker
by email at hnunneker@adirondackcsd.org.

The band is sponsored in part by the Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation.
