Blue Christmas service Dec. 21 in Rome

ROME — Members of the Rome Clergy Association will hold a Blue Christmas/Longest Night Service, “I Heard the Bells,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21, at First Presbyterian Church, 108 W. Court St.

The special worship gathering, held on the winter solstice which is the longest night of the year, is one of healing and hope for all who grieve during the Christmas season. The Rev. Edwina Landry, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, said while Christmas is a joyous season, there are many who find this time of year very difficult.

“They may be grieving the death of a loved one, the loss of a relationship or job, struggling with health issues, experiencing financial difficulties, or any number of challenges,” Landry said. “We want to offer a place where people can acknowledge that grief and feel supported.”

The pastor said the theme of the service comes from the history of poet Longfellow’s personal life, which was filled with multiple tragedies and grief.

“Hearing how he was able to find hope in the midst of all he was dealing with, on top of the Civil War this country was going through, and pen the poem, ‘Christmas Bells,’ later put to music. ‘I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day,’ can really resonate and inspire people with new hope,” Landry said.

The service is offered by members of the Rome Clergy Association. In addition to Pastor Landry, other local clergy participating include Pastor Karen Marshall of Rome Trinity Church, Pastor James Swanson of Rome Wesleyan Church, and Pastor Sherry Mahar of Rome First United Methodist Church. Grief resources will be available for those who attend.

For more information, call the church office at 315-336-1380. Those unable to attend in person can view the livestream on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/RomeFirstPresbyterian. The sanctuary entrance is handicapped accessible.
