Blades of Glory wins Copper City Classic Pond Hockey Tournament

ROME — Blades of Glory won the Copper City Classic Pond Hockey Tournament on Saturday at Kennedy Arena. The event was put on by the City of Rome’s Parks and Recreation Department, Labatt Blue, McCraith Beverages and Sleepy Hollow Golf Course.

Seven teams from Central New York competed. Each team played four games prior to being seeded in a single elimination bracket. After the round robin format, Blades of Glory, EEE and the Copper City Leafs took the top three spots, respectively.

Blades of Glory received a first round bye in the tournament while Fricken Chickens skated past Washed Up, EEE beat the Verona Vipers and the Dirty Dawgs upset the higher seed Copper City Leafs. In the semifinal matchups, Blades of Glory skated to a 16-10 win over Fricken Chickens and the Dirty Dawgs beat higher-seeded EEE 12-8.

In the championship, the Dirty Dawgs kept it close for the first half before Blades of Glory pulled away early in the second half. The Dirty Dawgs rallied to make a comeback but came up just short, falling 16-14.

Blades of Glory is Cam Ellis, Noah Lamie, Sam Scheon, Jimmy Kraeger and Josh Komacek. Each player from the winning team was awarded a Labatt Players Pack filled with Labatt Blue, Utica Comets and Big Deal Brewing Co. merchandise.
