Bellamy Community Awards Breakfast postponed

What would have been the 8th Annual Francis J. Bellamy Community Awards Breakfast, originally planned for Friday, Aug. 28, to commemorate the 89th anniversary of the death of the Pledge of Allegience author, been rescheduled to May 18, 2021.

The event will fall on the 165th anniversary of Bellamy’s birth.

“Given the concerns that still exist about holding large events, we felt that it was prudent to postpone this year’s Bellamy Breakfast,” said Victor Fariello, chairman of the Bellamy Awards Committee. “It also gives us a great opportunity to change the commemoration to a more happy event-Bellamy’s birthday rather than his death,” Fariello added.

Bellamy was born in Mount Morris on May 18, 1855 and died in Tampa, Fla., on August 28, 1931.

The Bellamy Awards Breakfast was started in 2013 and annually recognizes outstanding Rome residents. The first recipients of the Bellamy Community Award were Charles Sprock and Ava Dorfman in 2013. Last Year’s recipients were Tim Birnie, Rick Weltz and Alice Dearo (posthumously). The 2020-21 recipients will be announced in January 2021, Fariello said.

The rescheduled Bellamy Awards Breakfast on May 18, 2021 will be held at the Delta Lake Inn.

The event has been sponsored by NBT Bank since its inception.
