At least one displaced following Westmoreland house fire
WESTMORELAND — At least one person has been displaced after their home was destroyed by fire on Jenkins Road early Thursday morning, according to the Westmoreland Fire Department.
Fire Chief Jeff Grube said the one resident was home at 5517 Jenkins Road when he discovered the fire and called 911 shortly after 7 a.m. Thursday. The home is located just southeast of the intersection of state Route 26 and the New York State Thruway.
"The homeowner saw the smoke and the smoke alarms were going off," Grube explained. He said one person lives at the residence with other family staying over.
"Everyone got out," Grube noted.
Volunteers from five local departments responded to the scene and discovered the fire "well-involved" on arrival, Grube said. They tankered water to the scene from a nearby pond and initially launched an exterior attack on the one-story residence. Once the flames were a bit more under control, Grube said they moved the firefight indoors.
The fire took a couple of hours before it was fully knocked down, the chief stated. He said the home is a total loss.
Grube said it is "possibly" a chimney fire that spread to the rest of the home. He said the cause remains under investigation.
No one was injured. The chief said the homeowner has insurance. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced homeowner.
The Westmoreland, Vernon Center, Verona, Clinton and Stanwix Heights fire departments responded, with Clark Mills on standby.
