Area residents invited to take part in Giant Chanukah Gelt Drop
CLINTON — Chabad of Clinton is inviting area residents to the second annual Giant Chanukah Gelt Drop from 4:15 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 18, on the Village Green.
The lighting of the giant Menorah will follow, with hot latkes, fresh doughnuts, music, and children’s activities and crafts.
Clinton Fire Department will drop gelt — chocolate coins — from the top of their engine ladder. The Giant Gelt Drop represents abundant blessings that should “rain on all of us,” said Rabbi Didy Waks.
“While it is not a tradition to give gifts on Chanukah, or Hanukkah, it is an old Jewish custom to give children Chanukah gelt — pocket money,” Waks said. “It has evolved into a tradition to enjoy chocolate coins as well.”
