Area man airlifted to hospital after UTV accident

TOWN OF VIENNA — A 42-year-old man was air-lifted to a Syracuse hospital after a UTV fell on top of him Saturday night, according to law enforcement officials.

Sheriff’s deputies said George Kirk, of Vienna, was doing circles in a back yard on Haskins Road in a 2019 Polaris 900 HD side-by-side UTV at about 11:45 p.m. Saturday. Deputies said the resident, 66-year-old Brian Strong, was riding passenger.

While pulling circles in the yard, deputies said the UTV tipped over, throwing Kirk from the driver’s side and pinning him under the UTV. Deputies said Strong remained in his seat and was trapped inside the UTV.

Several sheriff’s deputies were responding to a separate incident at the nearby Treasure Isle RV Park and they rushed to help the two men, along with several bystanders. Authorities said they were able to life the UTV off Kirk and provide medical assistance until rescue personnel arrived.

Authorities said Kirk suffered injuries to his head, face and chest, and he was flown by Mercy Flight helicopter to University Hospital in Syracuse. Strong was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica for evaluation.

Deputies said the incident remains under investigation.
