Area jobless rate ticks up slightly to 4.5%
The unemployment rate in the Utica-Rome area increased from 4.4% in January 2022 to 4.5% in January 2023.
The unemployment rate was 3.5% in December.
Change in non-farm jobs since January
For the 12-month period ending January 2023, the non-farm job count in the Utica-Rome area increased 2,700, or 2.3%, to 120,600. Private sector employment rose 3,100, or 3.5%, to 91,300.
Job gains were posted in: education and health services, plus 1,200; leisure and hospitality, plus 900; trade, transportation, and utilities, plus 700; manufacturing, plus 500; and natural resources, mining, and construction, plus 200.
Government, minus 400; professional and business services, minus 300; and other services, minus 100; declined over the year.
County rankings
Oneida County ranked at 26 of 62 counties in the state for its unemployment rate which was 4.3% in January.
Madison County ranked at 34 with an unemployment rate of 4.6%.
Herkimer County ranked 50 with an unemployment rate of 5.4%.
Lewis County ranked 60 with an unemployment rate of 6.0%, according to the state Bureau of Labor Statistics.
