HERKIMER — The First Source Federal Credit Union has granted an additional $5,000 to Arc Herkimer and its Copper Café for 2023.

The Copper Café at Arc Herkimer Mall in Ilion has proven to be a well-received community venue in its first year, officials said. As an eatery, it has offered comfort foods and heart-healthy options to the public, including smoothie bowls, all-day breakfast and lunches, and daily specials. As an interactive training ground, it has provided vital on-the-job teaching for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities supported by Arc Herkimer.

“The continued support of First Source has aided us in increasing our capacity to train people supported with hands-on hospitality and culinary education, which continues to yield workforce-ready individuals,” said Catherine Loomis, Arc Herkimer vice president of community engagement and career development.

“We are also thankful for the opportunity to connect with First Source to provide personalized financial literacy to our café employees,” Loomis added.

At the café, individuals gain skills in cooking, food safety, customer service, cleaning, and point of sale that they can take with them to future community employment. First Source has also been paramount in working with people with disabilities in understanding finances, money management, goal setting, and planning for the future.

The Copper Café is open five days per week, Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. for breakfast, lunch, baked goods, and more. For more information, see its page on Facebook @arccoppercafe.
